BAR Red Tails

The character of BAR Red Tails comes through from the first drink. The menu features gin and tonics made with sansho pepper, gyokuro green tea and kombu, each priced at 1,100 yen. They offer a way to try something a little different from a classic gin and tonic, with distinctive ingredients to choose from. The infused-gin list ranges from black tea and gyokuro to pepper, sansho, kombu, dried shiitake mushrooms, kumquat, myoga ginger and young ginger. One visitor described telling the bartender what they liked and asking for advice on a drink to suit them. If a cocktail name alone does not make the choice clear, talking through your preferences can be part of the fun.

Other cocktails include a cucumber fizz (1,200 yen), a mixed berry mojito (1,300 yen) and an espresso martini (1,300 yen). The whisky selection includes Miyagikyo at 1,400 yen for 30 ml, while Yamazaki, Yoichi, Hakushu and Hibiki Japanese Harmony are each 1,700 yen. With cocktails and whisky on offer, there are plenty of ways to find a drink to suit the mood.

For something to eat, the original pizza (1,300 yen) is one option. A visitor who ordered pizza and beer recalled that it was just right for sharing and snacking. Homemade pickles (600 yen) and dry keema as a bar snack (900 yen) are lighter accompaniments. For a more substantial meal, spice curry is listed as available in around 3 varieties, at 1,300 yen.

This bar, where guests can dine in, is in Shokokuji Monzencho, Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto. One visitor found it quiet and easy to talk in, and it is also described as suitable for dining alone. It is closed on Tuesdays and open from 18:00 until 3:00 the following day on other days. It can suit an evening built around cocktails, or one spent over pizza or curry.
